A normal AC hums softly. Strange noises mean something is wrong. Seven common sounds:
- Clicks: Normal compressor start (2-3 sec). Persistent = thermostat or board issue.
- Whirring fan: 22-35 dB normal. Louder = blade dirt or bearing wear.
- Gurgling drain: Air in line, usually OK. Water leaks = clogged drain.
- Tapping (refrigerant): Short bursts OK. Continuous = leak.
- Hissing: Urgent! Refrigerant escaping. Switch off, ventilate, call technician.
- Buzzing: Loose outdoor mounts. Re-secure ASAP.
- Dripping: Condensate overflow — check drain.
